The Folded Flag Foundation marked its fourth year in operation in 2018 – and year after year we’ve seen an increase in awareness and support for the organization. While we continue to evolve, the one thing that remains constant is our commitment to helping our nation’s Gold Star spouses and children secure a future in honor of our fallen heroes.
As we connect with more and more families each year, we are seeing a vastly increasing need among younger children struggling to navigate the path to college after the loss of their military parents. Our goal remains to walk alongside these children throughout their educational journeys, making it critical that we continue to raise funding for both now and the future.
In 2018, we were able to award more than $1.8 million in educational scholarships that went to helping 205 scholarship recipients from across the nation. Of these recipients, 111 are new scholars, and 94 are returning scholars. The states that had the most educational grants awarded were North Carolina (27), Florida (26), California (17) and Georgia (14). The 2018-19 scholarships bring our total grant money awarded by Folded Flag to more than $3.4 million.
While this achievement is above what we anticipated, we continue to see a significant need in addition to what we have already done. We need to raise $5 million to cover a projected need of $100 million over the next 20 years.
Through the generosity of our underwriting partners – Black Knight, ServiceLink, Fidelity National Financial, and Fidelity National Investment Services – 100 PERCENT of your donations goes directly to helping Gold Star Families.
On behalf of The Folded Flag Foundation’s Board of Trustees and operating staff, I want to offer my sincerest gratitude to everyone who continues to show support. We would not be able to deliver the impact to help these spouses and children without each of you. For that, we are extremely grateful, and you have our deepest appreciation, as well as the appreciation of the families you have helped.
Thank you for your support,
John Coogan

In recognition of our fallen heroes, The Folded Flag Foundation offers scholarships and grants to qualifying spouses and children (aged 0-26) to assist with a wide range of educational needs, including supplies for tuition K-12; or tuition, supplies or living expenses for college or trade school.
All administrative costs are underwritten by our corporate sponsors – Black Knight, ServiceLink, Fidelity National Financial and Fidelity National Investment Services – so 100 PERCENT of all public donations goes directly to the families in need.
The Folded Flag Foundation raises money though various means, including:
-Corporate partnerships
-Individual donations
-Auctions
-Special events
Additionally, several individuals throughout the nation volunteer as ambassadors and host events in their communities to benefit the organization. These special and valued individuals are creating a grassroots movement to increase awareness and raise funds for Folded Flag.
The Folded Flag Foundation has identified nearly 6,000 spouses and children who will need educational funding over the next 20 years. Our goal is to raise $100 million to help fill this gap.
In 2018, The Folded Flag Foundation awarded more than $1.8 million in scholarships to 205 spouses and children. That is nearly $700,000 more than what was distributed in 2017. While we’ve seen incredible growth in our fourth full year in operation, our ultimate objective is to find and connect with each of the thousands of spouses and children who have lost a loved one in combat – which means a goal of $5 million in annual fundraising to cover a projected need of $100 million over the next 20 years for these families.
For the 2019-20 school year, we are projecting to double the number of scholarship applications received. Our goal is to award more than $2.5 million to these families to help support their education.
